La Brasserie

LA Brasserie 272

I visited an all day  French brasserie on the Brompton Road. From the outside you would think it wouldn’t be somewhere you’d expect Empty Pocket Guide to feature but I’m am so pleased we did.

As you walk through the door you notice the incredible atmosphere,  buzzing and friendly and this was on a Monday night. We were sat at the bar and sampled some happy hour cocktails.

If you are in the area on holiday, visiting the museums or shopping in South Kensington or Knightsbridge you should come to La Brasserie to experience the food and drink. I would even make a trip to South Kensington just to visit this place. It is unique, independent and vibrant.

There are special offers on everyday and there  is a happy hour from 5-7pm. You can get gorgeous cocktails for £6, beautiful wines £5, glass of champagne £7.50 and house spirits £4.50. Unlike any place I’ve ever visited in London they make a point to make it obvious how long of happy hour is left and even check to see if people want to get another drink before it has finished!
The cocktails are great, generous and made by charismatic bar staff, notably Alex. We sampled the Brompton Road (vodka, peach, passion fruit puree, passion fruit syrup, pineapple juice and champagne) and sniggered when we also ordered the Made in Chelsea (vodka, fresh blackberries, fresh strawberries, creme mure, passion syrup, champagne)  You are also served delicious nuts with your drinks!  The cocktails are normally priced at £8.50 and are so good I would have no qualms in paying this.
All the staff make a brilliant team and add to the atmosphere, they are constantly laughing, smiling, singing or having banter with the regulars and clearly loving their job.
We sat at the bar and had our cocktails and then were sat at a table to dine. The tables are in a brasserie style, exactly would you would expect in Paris,  and the atmosphere is informal and non exclusive . The menu is French including lots of seafood and  there is also a seasonal set menu. 2 courses £23.95 and 3 courses £27.25 saving a third of the cost if you had ordered these dishes separately. You can get lobster for half price on Sundays.
I opted for a burger as on Mondays burgers are priced at £10.90, usually £15.90.

The burger was delicious, served with chips and onion rings and you could taste the good quality of meat!
My friend opted for the scallops and fell in love with the combination with bacon and pea purée.

We then finished our meal with an espresso martini, which Alex showed us how to make.

The service in this restaurant is 5 star. The staff are wonderfully attentive, There is a cloakroom which is especially brilliant in the winter when you have loads of layers and want to sit at the bar.
The manager Cesar was friendly, kind to the clients and  very generous. He was also working extremely hard to make sure everyone was happy, which everybody evidently was. The restaurant was  completely full on a Monday night and everyone was smiling and chatting. Last orders for food is taken at 11.30pm.
It’s the kind of place I can’t wait to bring my parents but also a group of girl friends for an afternoon tea and a cocktail. It would also be perfect for a date.
Nobody is in a rush, it’s laid back, sophisticated and fun.
The atmosphere was so friendly with lots of regulars sitting by the bar that I can only imagine this is what ‘Cheers’ felt like!
